This is realy simple to make into a fun miniprofession...
You should be able to use your reaserch points you get from your R&D agent to "hire" him to truely work for you, within some simple rules:
-A bpo=1000 bpc (or somthing. a bp is only an original as long as its not researched for "improvment".
-To hire your R&D agent to reaserch for you, you will have to pay him with reaserch points, bpc's and the needed resources (as Science Graduates, Janitors, T2 component parts, Research databases and so on).
-If you do reverse engineering on an item that has been "improved", you should be able to EARN reasearch points in the correspondent field. Reverse engineering an item, destroyes that item afer a while.
-an R&D agent can "improve" a stat group on a bpc, the cost increses the more you try to increase it (a T2 is alredy "improved" and should be extreamly costly to improve further).
-an upgraded bpc need T2 comps to build (and in some cases even COSMOS parts, if the improvements is large enough)
-Ship slot numbers/layout is a stat group. -Ship armor (or shield, or hull) is a stat group. -Ship mass, speed, intertia is a stat group. -Ship signature radius, tageting, signal strength is a stat group. ...and so on... -modules follows similar stat groups, but mostly have only 2 groups (groups for increseing positives, one to decrese negatives).
To research in a stat group for a bpc, you have to use the correct R&D agent type (starship engeneering for slot group, electronics for signature radius goup and so on).
After some researching you get the option to change the stats in the group you researced, by an amount dependent on the researched done and stat group.
An Example:
After giving a BPO of a battleship, and payed alot of resources and research points to a starship R&D agent (then waiting some time, dependent on skill), i can upgrade the ship bpc in the slot number/layout stat group. However, as i only had so many points, i could only add one hi-slot. I get back a bpc with 700 runs.
As i am a realy good researcher, i also can use more then one R&D agent, and i have some research points with an agent that can help me with the armor resists. So i give him the job, and some time later i can increse armor resist by 25% (i add 16% to "explosive resistance", rest divided evenly to the rest of the resist types). However, now my bpc now only have 580 runns...
Basically, starting with a 1000 run ship bpc (a bpo), research it with all the types of R&D agent types, COULD give the same as a T2 (dependent on the choises u make), but you would only end up with like 50-150 runs (and having used alot of reasearch points and resourses).
Better Skills gives you a wider range of research options, reduces "time to cook" and reduces "cost to cook".
